Hampstead Elementary School provides a variation on the classic Smith Carter small-school design because instead of compromising the early design with an insensitive addition, an addition which doubled the size of the school was added via a link that was successfully fitted up as the new entrance
The original 1960 design calls for a simple one-storey double-loaded corridor, here with a signature rafter-and-eaves wall treatment between brick-covered wall fins which demark each classroom
The newer portion on the south side is a two-toned red brick veneer over two storeys, with an academic wing, a large gymnasium and library; the link picks up a bit of the old school and integrates with the new red brick portion
Hampstead schoolyard abuts a rail line with a gated fence and a path across the tracks to the adjacent neighbourhood
