Design Characteristics

Suburb:Lakewood, St. James
  • Lakewood is a smaller elementary French immersion school built as a single whole in 1970 and with few exterior changes since
  • It is mainly a single storey (except for the gym wing), covered in a red variegated brick with heavy mansard eaves overhanging in what looks like cedar shakes, in a series of advancing and receding volumes that corresponds to the interior function in each block of space
  • The centre entrance block is particularly inviting, low, with many windows and containing a landscaped yard and sidewalk leading to the main entrance
  • Planned to contain mainly open-air classrooms, there are few windows in several sections
  • The yard is generous with a play structure and paved recreation areas
