More Information

This is a medium-sized one-and-two-storey school for elementary grades that is of pleasing proportions and details. It replaced an older school onsite by the same name; it is currently a French immersion elementary school.

Design Characteristics

Suburb:Booth, St. James
  • Constructed of concrete and steel, the walls and partitions are concrete block with the whole covered in a dark brown brick with bright white trim
  • Initially only 12 classrooms and possibly a gym, Bannatyne School was given a large two-storey addition in 1970 to bring it to its present configuration; there have not been many other obvious alterations to the exterior, including the retention of the window bands in the newer classroom portion
  • The plan sets the 1970 academic wing in two sections with the administration area in the centre of the complex and the gym to the rear; the older section is on the west side facing Thompson Drive while the 1970 section is oriented north to Bruce Avenue; the two main entries are offset and indented
  • The age of the site as a schoolyard has provided some lovely mature trees
